FAQ's

Do your prices include VAT?
Yes, all prices listed are inclusive of VAT.

What does Pre-finished mean?
The majority of our doors come untreated and will therefore require varnishing/staining before fitting.  Some doors are now available Pre-finished, which means that the door has been already sealed (usually with a clear satin lacquer) at the factory and hence the door is ready to be fitted without any further finishing (trimmed edges will obviously need to be re-sealed).

Can I finish my door with wax or teak oil?

We would not advise you use any type of wax or oil on your doors. This is because when a door is manufactured the timber used has controlled moisture content, the above mentioned treatments will not seal the moisture into the door. This may allow moisture ingress or loss to occur causing your door to either swell or shrink. All of our doors differ slightly, full finishing instructions are available on our website (please visit our Door care guide) and are also included in the packaging and/or supplied with your sales invoice.

Section of a Door

Are your doors solid Oak, Ash, Pine, Hardwood?
No.  While 99% of our doors have a solid core, this does not mean that they are solid Oak, Ash, Pine, Hardwood etc.  It is quite normal and standard practice for doors to be made from engineered or LVL compononents.  This means that the door will have a veneer of Oak, Ash, Pine etc over a composite solid (not hollow) core.  Applying doors with a real wood veneer provides greater uniformity in colour and enhances the appearance of the door.  It also gives the door greater stability and less chance of twisting or splitting. One other benefit is that it is much better for the enviroment (less waste).
Making doors this way gives a much more stable construction being less susceptible to problems that solid timber components have such as twisting and bowing.

What does "Engineered" or "LVL" mean?
Laminated Veneered Lumber (LVL) is a method of construction that is economical with the use of natural timber resources. The main parts and rails of the door are constructed using strips/blocks of timber, which are glued and clamped together. This is then faced with timber to give the appearance that it is one solid piece. Panels may have an MDF or particle wood insert to stop any chance of splitting. We find this the best method of construction by far, and will make the door more stable and much less likely to warp.

What is dowel construction?
Dowel construction doors are made from individual components (top, middle & bottom rails, stiles and panels) which are then jointed together by way of using large fluted dowels, which are then glued and inserted into dowel holes. The whole door is then clamped together using a hydraulic press until dry. This method is the more modern approach in door manufacturing and is used to assemble many external and nearly all internal doors.

What is Mortice and Tennon (M&T) construction?

Mortice and Tennon DoorsM&T construction means the way in which the door is jointed together. A “Tennon” peg from one section of timber is let into a “mortised” hole in another section. The Tennon is then glued and wedged into place to secure a solid joint. The door panels are then set in waterproof mastic ensuring that the highest level of weatherproofing is achieved. Doors made from an M&T construction are traditionally better equipped to withstand the rigors of severe weather.

Do I measure in inches or millimetres?
Most domestic properties in the UK use Imperial size doors (78" x 27", 78" x 30" etc).  Some properties built in recent years have Metric sized doors.  Our doors are listed using Imperial AND Metric sizes where appropriate.

I need a fire rated door, which door shall I buy?
Your local council will specify this; many of our styles are available with a certified fire rating of either FD30 or FD60. Do not hesitate to contact us for advice on the types and styles available.

Do you have a fitting service?
Yes, we offer a full supply and fit service, please contact us for more details.

Should I book a joiner before my doors are delivered?
Absolutely not. Always wait until your door/s is delivered prior to arranging a joiner. We have great faith in our distributors, but doors are not an easy product to transport and complications on delivery can occur, especially on special order items where in rare cases, problems in supply may mean the original lead time is reinstated.

What does "Pre-Hung" mean?
We offer select door styles in a "Pre-hung" form - Which means the door will be supplied to you already in its lining with the hinges & latch/lock already fitted.  This will speed up the fitting process dramatically and can also save you money on your labour charges.  All of our Pre-hung sets are only available to order, so please allow plenty of time for delivery.

Can you cut my door to...?
No, we do not have a cut to size service as this really needs to be done on site by your installer to ensure that the door is cut to suit the frame.

I need to reduce my door to suit the opening I have, how much can I take off the door?
On external doors we recommend that no more than 9mm be removed from any given edge.  Sometimes door openings are a non standard size e.g. 31 1/2" x 78".  In this situation we would advise that you purchase an 80” x 32” door and reduce the height rather than the width, as there is more width to the bottom rail than the door stiles.  However removing more than 1” from either the height or width will invalidate the guarantee.  On internal doors, we recommend no more than 9mm (3/8 inch) be removed from the sides and top and bottom of the door. As with the external door, if a greater amount requires removal from the height of a door it should be taken from the bottom rail.

Why are items sometimes out of stock?
Every effort is made to maintain availability of all our items, but due to popularity and supply issues, some products may not always be available. We keep strong links with all our suppliers so should there be an item out of stock we can usually give you  a rough estimate of when it will arrive.

Are the glazed Doors Part L Compliant?
We now offer a range of White Oak external doors that have been manufactured to meet current Government regulations for energy efficiency (Part L).  Relevant u values are shown in against each door, click Oak Part L Compliant Doors to view the range.
